What is SAP S/4HANA Training (Migration & System Conversion)?

SAP S/4HANA conversion training teaches you to plan and execute the move from SAP ECC to S/4HANA. You compare the three transition paths (new implementation, system conversion, selective data transition), run the readiness check and work through simplification items, adapt custom code, handle the mandatory business partner conversion and the finance data migration, execute the technical conversion with Software Update Manager and DMO, then plan testing, cutover and hypercare. It maps to the SAP Certified Specialist exam for S/4HANA conversion and system upgrade.

What you get

  • Compare the three S/4HANA transition scenarios and recommend one with reasoning
  • Run and interpret the SAP Readiness Check
  • Work through simplification items and build a remediation backlog
  • Plan and estimate custom code adaptation

Curriculum

S/4HANA fundamentals and what actually changed

Establish exactly what is different, because the conversion effort is driven by these changes.

  • S/4HANA versus ECC: architecture and data model
  • The Universal Journal and the end of separate finance tables
  • Business partner as the single customer and vendor object
  • Simplified logistics: MATNR length, MM and SD changes
  • Fiori as the primary user experience
  • Embedded analytics and the virtual data model
  • Deployment: on-premise, private cloud, public cloud
  • Release strategy and maintenance windows

Transition scenarios and roadmap

Choose the right path, because this decision shapes budget, risk and timeline more than anything else.

  • New implementation (greenfield): when it wins
  • System conversion (brownfield): when it wins
  • Selective data transition: the middle path
  • Cost, risk and downtime compared
  • SAP Activate methodology and phases
  • Building the business case and the roadmap
  • Landscape strategy during the transition
  • Common reasons conversions fail

Readiness check and simplification items

Find out what the system will refuse to convert before you start, not during the weekend.

  • SAP Readiness Check: running and reading it
  • Simplification item catalogue and relevance
  • Simplification item checks (SI checks) and consistency
  • Custom code impact analysis in the readiness check
  • Sizing the target system
  • Add-on and business function compatibility
  • Third-party interface inventory
  • Producing a prioritised remediation backlog

Custom code adaptation

Deal with the customer's own developments, usually the largest single work package.

  • Custom code migration worklist (ATC on S/4HANA)
  • Remote ATC setup and check variants
  • Simplification database and where-used analysis
  • Fixing MATNR length, table access and obsolete function modules
  • Decommissioning unused custom code
  • Clean core positioning during conversion
  • Testing and evidence for adapted objects
  • Estimating custom code effort realistically

Business partner conversion

Handle the mandatory master data conversion that trips up most first-time projects.

  • Why business partner replaces customer and vendor
  • Customer vendor integration (CVI) explained
  • BP roles, groupings and number ranges
  • Data cleansing before conversion
  • Synchronisation cockpit and error handling
  • Duplicate and inconsistent master data
  • Post-conversion validation
  • Ongoing BP governance after go-live

Finance data migration

Convert the financial data correctly, since finance is the area with the least tolerance for error.

  • The finance conversion phases
  • Preparation: open items, ledgers, currencies
  • Customising migration for finance
  • Data migration and enrichment steps
  • Reconciliation before and after conversion
  • Asset accounting conversion specifics
  • Controlling and margin analysis changes
  • Sign-off criteria for the finance team

Technical conversion with SUM and DMO

Run the conversion itself and keep downtime inside the agreed window.

  • Maintenance Planner and the stack XML
  • Software Update Manager phases
  • Database Migration Option (DMO) explained
  • Downtime-optimised DMO and near-zero downtime options
  • Pre-processing, downtime and post-processing phases
  • Monitoring the run and handling errors
  • Rollback and fallback planning
  • Repeating the run: cycles and dress rehearsals

Testing, cutover and hypercare

Prove the converted system works and get the business through go-live weekend.

  • Test strategy: unit, integration, regression, UAT
  • Automated regression testing options
  • Cutover plan construction and rehearsal
  • Freeze periods and transport management during cutover
  • Go-live weekend runbook and command centre
  • Hypercare structure and ticket triage
  • Post go-live optimisation backlog
  • Lessons learned and the next wave

Projects you will build

Readiness assessment

Run a readiness check on a sample ECC system, analyse simplification items and custom code findings, and produce a prioritised remediation plan with effort estimates.

Business partner conversion

Cleanse a customer and vendor data set, configure CVI, run synchronisation, resolve errors and validate the resulting business partners.

Cutover plan and rehearsal

Build a detailed cutover runbook for a conversion weekend with tasks, owners, timings, checkpoints and a rollback decision point, then walk it through as a rehearsal.

Tools you will use

SAP Readiness Check
The assessment that tells you what the conversion will cost before you commit. You run and interpret one in the first project.
Maintenance Planner
Where the target stack is planned and the stack XML for SUM is generated.
Software Update Manager with DMO
The tool that performs the conversion. You walk through every phase and the monitoring screens.
ATC with remote check
Custom code analysis against the S/4HANA simplification database, producing the developer worklist.
CVI synchronisation cockpit
Customer vendor integration monitoring, used throughout the business partner conversion.
Finance migration cockpit
The guided finance conversion steps and their reconciliation reports.

What learners say

The readiness check and cutover sessions are the two things I wish my first conversion project had understood. Genuinely practical.

Ramesh T., S/4HANA Programme Lead

DMO explained phase by phase, including what actually happens in downtime. That removed a lot of fear from our first cycle.

Fatima Z., SAP Technical Consultant

The finance migration module was the most valuable. Reconciliation points and sign-off criteria are rarely taught anywhere.

Chris D., SAP Finance Consultant

Frequently asked questions

Is this a beginner SAP course?

No. It assumes you already work with SAP, functionally or technically, and know what an ECC system looks like. If you are new to SAP, start with a module course such as FICO, MM or Basis first.

Greenfield or brownfield, which should a client choose?

It depends on how much of the existing process and data is worth keeping. We teach the decision criteria: process debt, custom code volume, data quality, downtime tolerance and budget, so you can make the case either way with evidence.

Do I need Basis skills for conversion work?

Not necessarily. Conversion teams include functional, technical and Basis roles. We cover the SUM and DMO run so that non-Basis consultants understand what is happening, without expecting you to run it alone.

How long does a real conversion take?

Typically six to eighteen months depending on scope, custom code and the number of countries. The technical conversion weekend is the smallest part; readiness, remediation and testing consume most of the timeline.

Which certification does this prepare me for?

The SAP Certified Specialist exam for S/4HANA conversion and system upgrade. Confirm the current exam code with SAP before booking.

Is there hands-on work?

Yes. You run a readiness check, perform a business partner conversion and build a full cutover runbook in a guided practice environment.
