You configure spaces, users and connections, ingest data through replication flows and federation, model with graphical and SQL views, build analytic models and the business layer, orchestrate data and transformation flows, apply the catalog and data governance, and consume the result in SAP Analytics Cloud.

What you get

  • Set up spaces, connections and ingestion into Datasphere

Curriculum

Datasphere foundations and spaces

Understand the architecture and the space concept that governs everything.

  • Datasphere in the SAP data and analytics strategy
  • Relationship to BW, BW/4HANA and HANA Cloud
  • Spaces: allocation, members and priority
  • Space isolation and data sharing
  • Tenant administration and monitoring
  • Roles, scopes and privileges
  • Elastic compute and sizing
  • Lifecycle: development, test, production

Connections and data ingestion

Get data in, whether by copying it or leaving it where it is.

  • Connection types: SAP and non-SAP
  • S/4HANA and BW connectivity
  • Cloud storage and database connections
  • Replication flows and delta handling
  • Federation versus replication trade-offs
  • Data provisioning agent and on-premise sources
  • Premium outbound integration
  • Monitoring ingestion and troubleshooting

Data modelling: views and entities

Build the models the business will actually query.

  • Local tables and remote tables
  • Graphical view builder
  • SQL views and SQLScript views
  • Joins, unions and projections
  • Calculated columns and filters
  • Dimensions, facts and hierarchies
  • Currency conversion and units
  • Model validation and impact analysis

Analytic models and the business layer

Expose semantics rather than raw tables.

  • Analytic model concept and purpose
  • Measures, dimensions and variables
  • Restricted and calculated measures
  • Business builder objects: dimension, fact, consumption model
  • Perspectives and authorisations
  • Semantic usage and annotations
  • Modelling for SAP Analytics Cloud consumption
  • Performance considerations in analytic models

Data flows and transformation

Prepare and shape data inside the platform.

  • Data flow design and operators
  • Projection, join, aggregation and script operators
  • Python script operator basics
  • Target tables and load behaviour
  • Task chains and orchestration
  • Scheduling and monitoring runs
  • Error handling and reprocessing
  • Incremental loading patterns

Catalog, governance and security

Make the data findable, trusted and appropriately restricted.

  • Catalog: assets, terms and metadata
  • Business glossary and stewardship
  • Data lineage and impact analysis
  • Data access controls and row-level security
  • Space-level and object-level privileges
  • Data sharing between spaces
  • Data protection and privacy considerations
  • Auditing and monitoring usage

Consumption, BW coexistence and operations

Deliver value to end users and coexist with what already exists.

  • Consuming Datasphere models in SAP Analytics Cloud
  • Live connection versus import
  • Consuming from third-party tools via SQL and ODBC
  • BW bridge and BW coexistence scenarios
  • Migration considerations from BW to Datasphere
  • Monitoring, logs and system health
  • Cost and capacity management
  • Operating model and team roles

Projects you will build

End-to-end data product

Connect a source, replicate data, model a star schema with graphical views, build an analytic model and expose it as a story-ready data source.

Federated versus replicated comparison

Model the same requirement using federation and replication, compare performance and cost, and justify which one you would put into production.

Governance and security build

Apply data access controls for two user personas, publish assets to the catalog with business terms and demonstrate lineage across the model.

Tools you will use

Data Builder
Graphical and SQL view modelling plus analytic models. Your main modelling workspace.
Business Builder
The semantic layer: dimensions, facts, consumption models and perspectives.
Connections and replication flows
Ingestion configuration and delta monitoring from SAP and non-SAP sources.
Data flows and task chains
Transformation and orchestration, including scheduling and error handling.
Catalog
Asset publishing, glossary terms, lineage and stewardship.
Space management
Storage allocation, member assignment and monitoring across spaces.

What learners say

I came from BW. The space model and the federation versus replication decision were the two things I needed, and both were covered with real trade-offs.

Srikanth D., SAP Datasphere Consultant

Business Builder finally made sense as a semantic layer rather than an extra step. The analytic model sessions were excellent.

Ingrid H., Data Engineer

The governance project is the part most teams skip and then regret. Good that it was mandatory here.

Rajat V., Analytics Lead

What a day looks like

Load monitoring
Checking overnight replication flows and task chains, and reprocessing anything that failed.
Modelling
Building or extending views and analytic models against a business requirement.
Performance work
Investigating a slow story, usually a federation decision or a join that should have been pushed down.
Governance
Publishing assets, tidying business terms and reviewing who has access to which space.
Business conversation
Clarifying a definition with a data owner, because most modelling disputes are semantic, not technical.

Frequently asked questions

Is Datasphere replacing BW?

It is SAP's strategic cloud data platform, and new investment goes there. BW and BW/4HANA remain in use and are supported for a defined period, and the BW bridge exists precisely to allow coexistence, which we cover.

Do I need BW experience?

No, but data warehousing concepts are important. If you come from BW, the modelling concepts transfer; if you come from general data engineering, the SAP source specifics are the new part.

How much SQL do I need?

A good working level. Graphical modelling covers much of the work, but SQL views and script operators appear in most real projects.

Which certification does this prepare me for?

The SAP Certified Associate Data Engineer exam for SAP Datasphere. Confirm the current code before booking.

Does this include SAP Analytics Cloud?

Consumption is covered so your models are usable. For full story building, dashboards and planning, take our SAP Analytics Cloud course.

Is there tenant access?

Yes, guided access to a practice tenant for modelling, flows and governance exercises.
