Curriculum

Controlling foundations and enterprise structure

Get the structure right first, because controlling objects cannot be reorganised casually later.

  • What controlling answers that financial accounting does not
  • Controlling area, company code and operating concern
  • Currency and fiscal year settings in controlling
  • The Universal Journal and what changed in S/4HANA
  • Cost objects: the full inventory and when each is used
  • Controlling versus profit centre accounting
  • Number ranges and CO document types
  • Master data governance for controlling objects

Cost element and cost centre accounting

Build the backbone that every allocation and report later depends on.

  • Primary and secondary cost elements
  • Cost element groups and reporting hierarchies
  • Cost centre master data and categories
  • Standard hierarchy design that survives reorganisations
  • Statistical key figures and activity types
  • Activity price planning and calculation
  • Direct and indirect activity allocation
  • Cost centre planning and plan versions

Allocations, assessments and distributions

Move cost to where it belongs, defensibly.

  • Distribution versus assessment: the real difference
  • Cycle and segment design
  • Reposting: line item and transaction based
  • Periodic reposting and accrual calculation
  • Template allocation basics
  • Splitting: cost centre splitting structures
  • Allocation errors and how to trace them
  • Documenting allocation logic for auditors

Internal orders and overhead controlling

Track discrete pieces of work that do not deserve a cost centre.

  • Internal order types and their configuration
  • Statistical versus real internal orders
  • Order planning and budgeting
  • Availability control and tolerance limits
  • Commitment management
  • Settlement rules and settlement profiles
  • Overhead costing sheets and credit keys
  • Order status management and closing

Product cost planning

Work out what a product should cost before you make it.

  • Cost component structure design
  • Costing variants, types and valuation variants
  • Quantity and value structure: BOM and routing
  • Cost estimate with quantity structure
  • Cost estimate without quantity structure
  • Marking and releasing standard costs
  • Costing runs for mass estimates
  • Analysing a cost estimate that looks wrong

Actual costing, material ledger and COPA

Compare plan to reality and explain the margin.

  • Material ledger activation and currencies
  • Actual costing run and the price determination
  • Variance categories and variance calculation
  • Work in process and results analysis
  • Account-based COPA in S/4HANA
  • Characteristics, value fields and derivation
  • Margin analysis reporting and drilldowns
  • Costing-based COPA: where it still appears

Period-end close, reporting and integration

Close controlling reliably and report on it in Fiori.

  • The CO month-end sequence, step by step
  • Order and project settlement in the close
  • Reconciliation between FI and CO
  • Standard CO reports and report painter basics
  • Fiori apps and analytical queries for controlling
  • Integration with MM: goods movements and valuation
  • Integration with PP: order costing and confirmations
  • Integration with SD: cost of goods sold and margin

Projects you will build

Controlling structure build

Configure a controlling area with cost centres, activity types and a standard hierarchy, then post and allocate costs through a full period.

Product costing scenario

Build a cost component structure and costing variant, create a standard cost estimate from a BOM and routing, mark and release it, and explain each cost component.

Margin analysis and close

Configure account-based COPA with derivation, run a period-end close including settlement and variance calculation, and produce a margin report by product and customer.

Tools you will use

Cost centre and cost element master data
KS01, KA01 and the Fiori equivalents, the objects every CO posting lands on.
Allocation cycles
Assessment and distribution cycle maintenance, where overhead is moved to consuming objects.
Costing variant configuration
The settings that decide how a cost estimate values material, activity and overhead.
Material ledger and actual costing
CKMLCP and the actual costing run, used for periodic revaluation and true product cost.
Margin analysis apps
Account-based COPA reporting in Fiori, the modern replacement for classic COPA reports.
Report painter
Still widely used for custom CO reports, so we cover enough to read and adapt existing ones.

What learners say

Product costing is where most training gives up. Building a cost estimate from a real BOM and defending every component changed how I interview.

Deepa M., SAP CO Consultant

The allocation module alone was worth it. I finally understand why our assessment cycles produced numbers nobody trusted.

Martin H., Finance Systems Analyst

I came from a costing role with no SAP. The FI and CO integration sessions connected what I already knew to the system.

Ravi T., Cost Accountant

What a day looks like

Close support
Chasing a settlement that failed or a variance nobody can explain, usually the week the books close.
Cost estimate queries
A product cost that moved unexpectedly, traced back to a price, a BOM change or a routing update.
Configuration
A new cost centre group, an allocation change or a derivation rule for margin reporting.
Reconciliation
Proving FI and CO agree, which in S/4HANA is easier but still needs checking on migrated data.
Business conversation
Explaining to a plant controller why the system says what it says, in their language rather than SAP's.

Frequently asked questions

Should I learn FI or CO first?

Either works, but they are one journal in S/4HANA. If you have a costing or management accounting background, CO is the natural entry, and we cover the FI touchpoints you need.

Is classic COPA still relevant?

Account-based COPA is the S/4HANA standard and where we spend our time. We cover costing-based COPA because plenty of live systems still run it and you will meet it on projects.

Do I need manufacturing knowledge for product costing?

Some helps, and we teach the BOM and routing concepts you need. You do not need to be a PP consultant.

Which certification does this map to?

C_TS4CO_2023, the SAP Certified Associate exam for Management Accounting in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition. SAP re-versions these exams, so confirm the current code before booking.

Is CO in demand or is it a legacy skill?

In demand. Every S/4HANA project needs controlling, and the module changed enough with the Universal Journal that experienced consultants still have to relearn parts of it.

Is there hands-on access?

Yes, for master data, allocations, product costing, COPA and the period-end close across all three projects.
