What is SAP MDG Training (Master Data Governance)?

SAP MDG training teaches you to implement Master Data Governance so master data is created once, correctly, and distributed everywhere. You cover the MDG domains for material, business partner, supplier, customer and finance, the change request process and BRF+ workflow, data modelling and Floorplan Manager UI configuration, validations, derivations and duplicate checks, data quality management, consolidation and mass processing, and replication through DRF and SOA services.

What you get

  • Explain governance, consolidation and mass processing and when to use each
  • Extend an MDG data model safely
  • Configure change request types with BRF+ workflow
  • Build and adapt MDG request user interfaces

Who this course is for

New to the field

  • Data governance and master data teams
  • Functional consultants moving into data management
  • Consultants on a data quality programme

Working professionals

  • S/4HANA conversion teams cleaning master data
  • Shared service centres owning master data creation
  • Anyone targeting an MDG role

Prerequisites

  • SAP experience in any module is important, because MDG governs data you need to already understand.
  • No coding required.

What you will be able to do

Curriculum

Master data governance foundations

Understand why bad master data is expensive, and what MDG actually changes.

  • The business case for master data governance
  • Central governance versus consolidation versus mass processing
  • MDG deployment options: hub and co-deployed
  • MDG domains and their scope
  • Governance roles: requester, specialist, steward, approver
  • MDG versus MDM and third-party tools
  • Where MDG fits in an S/4HANA landscape
  • Defining a governance operating model

Data modelling and the MDG data model

Learn the model layer that everything else configures against.

  • MDG data models and entity types
  • Attributes, relationships and hierarchies
  • Storage and usage types
  • Reuse versus flex options
  • Extending a standard data model
  • Custom entity types and fields
  • Data model activation and consistency
  • Impact of model changes on existing requests

Change requests and process modelling

Configure the workflow that turns a data request into governed data.

  • Change request types and their configuration
  • Single object and multi object change requests
  • Process modelling: steps, actions, status
  • Rule-based workflow with BRF+
  • Agent determination and approval levels
  • Parallel processing and collective processing
  • Change request analytics and SLA
  • Handling rejections and rework

UI configuration and user experience

Make the request screens usable, because adoption depends on it.

  • Floorplan Manager basics for MDG
  • UI building blocks and configuration
  • Field properties: visible, mandatory, read only
  • UI Building Block Configuration (UIBB)
  • Feeder classes and enhancements
  • Fiori apps for MDG requests
  • Search, duplicate check and value help
  • Personalisation and role-based UI

Validations, derivations and data quality

Enforce the rules that make governance meaningful.

  • Validation rules with BRF+
  • Derivation rules and default values
  • Duplicate check and matching configuration
  • Data quality management and rules
  • Data quality dashboards and scorecards
  • Remediation processes
  • Standard checks versus custom checks
  • Balancing strictness with usability

Domains in depth: material, business partner, finance

Work through the domains most projects actually implement.

  • MDG-M: material master governance
  • Views, plants and organisational data in requests
  • MDG-BP, MDG-S and MDG-C for partners
  • Supplier and customer specific rules
  • MDG-F: financial master data
  • Cost centres, profit centres and hierarchies
  • Domain specific data models and UIs
  • Prioritising domains in a rollout

Consolidation, replication and operations

Get governed data out to every system that needs it, and keep it clean over time.

  • Consolidation process: match, best record, activate
  • Mass processing for bulk changes
  • Data Replication Framework configuration
  • Replication models, business systems and filters
  • SOA services, IDoc and ALE replication
  • Key mapping and value mapping
  • Monitoring replication and error handling
  • Ongoing governance and stewardship metrics

Projects you will build

Material governance process

Configure a material change request type with a multi-step approval workflow, validations and duplicate check, then run a creation request end to end.

Business partner consolidation

Load a messy supplier data set, run matching and best record calculation, activate the consolidated result and review the key mapping.

Replication setup

Configure a replication model to a connected system, replicate a governed object, break it deliberately and diagnose the failure.

Tools you will use

MDG change request UI
The requester and approver experience, and the screen you spend most configuration effort on.
Data model configuration
Entity types, attributes and relationships, the foundation of every MDG object.
BRF+
Rule-based workflow, validations and derivations, all configured without code.
Consolidation and mass processing
Matching, best record and bulk change processes for cleaning data at scale.
Data Replication Framework
Replication models, filters and monitoring, where governed data leaves the hub.
Data quality dashboards
Rules, scores and remediation lists used by data stewards.

Certification

What learners say

The change request and BRF+ modules are the core of the job and they are taught properly here, not skimmed.

Kavitha R., SAP MDG Consultant

Consolidation versus governance was finally explained clearly. We were using the wrong one for our use case.

Bhaskar N., Data Governance Lead

The replication project caught me out in the best way. Debugging a broken DRF setup is exactly what the job is.

Anna F., Master Data Analyst

What a day looks like

Request queue
Change requests stuck in workflow, usually an agent determination or a validation nobody can satisfy.
Configuration
Adding a field to a request UI, adjusting a validation, or extending the data model for a new attribute.
Data quality review
Running quality rules and working the remediation list with the stewards who own each domain.
Replication monitoring
Checking that governed records reached the connected systems and fixing failures.
Governance meeting
Agreeing rules with business data owners, which is as much of the job as configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need another SAP module first?

Yes, some SAP background is important. MDG governs material, partner or finance data, so you need to understand what those objects are before governing them.

Is MDG only for S/4HANA?

MDG is most commonly deployed with S/4HANA now, either co-deployed or as a hub. The concepts apply to both.

Is there coding?

Very little. BRF+ rules and UI configuration are the main tools. Deeper enhancements need ABAP, which we point out but do not require.

Which certification does this map to?

The SAP Master Data Governance associate certification. SAP has re-versioned this exam over time, so confirm the current code and syllabus before booking.

How does MDG relate to an S/4HANA conversion?

Directly. Conversions expose duplicate and incomplete master data, and MDG is often introduced during or immediately after. Our S/4HANA conversion course covers the other side of that story.

Is there hands-on access?

Yes, for data modelling, change requests, consolidation and replication across all three projects.
