What is SAP Variant Configuration Training (AVC and LO-VC)?

SAP Variant Configuration training teaches you to model products that are ordered in thousands of valid combinations. You cover characteristics and characteristic values, classes and classification, configuration profiles, object dependencies including preconditions, selection conditions, procedures and actions, constraints and constraint nets, super BOM and super routing with dependency assignment, Advanced Variant Configuration and how it differs from classic LO-VC, variant pricing with variant conditions, configuration in sales orders and quotations, and the flow into production orders.

What you get

  • Model characteristics, values and classes for a configurable product
  • Create configuration profiles with a usable interface
  • Write preconditions, selection conditions and procedures correctly
  • Build and test constraint nets

  • Configurable products versus variants as materials
  • Make to order configurable scenarios
  • LO-VC and Advanced Variant Configuration
  • When AVC is worth adopting
  • Master data landscape for configuration
  • Configuration in the order to cash flow
  • Key transactions and Fiori apps
  • Scoping a configuration project

Characteristics and classes

Define the questions and the answers.

  • Characteristic creation and data types
  • Characteristic values and value hierarchies
  • Restrictable characteristics and allowed values
  • Multiple values and intervals
  • Class type 300 and classification
  • Class node structure
  • Characteristic groups and user interface design
  • Naming and governance for large models

Configuration profiles and user interface

Control how the product is configured.

  • Configuration profile creation
  • Configuration parameters and scenarios
  • Class assignment to the profile
  • Interface design and characteristic sequence
  • Value assignment and defaults
  • Configuration initial screen
  • Multi-level configuration
  • Testing a profile before release

Object dependencies

Encode the product rules.

  • Dependency types overview
  • Preconditions and their use
  • Selection conditions for BOM and routing
  • Procedures and value inference
  • Actions and why they are discouraged
  • Dependency syntax and variables
  • Dependency assignment points
  • Debugging a dependency that does not fire

Constraints and constraint nets

Model relationships that work in any direction.

  • Constraints versus dependencies
  • Constraint syntax and objects
  • Constraint nets and their maintenance
  • Inference and restriction
  • Constraint performance considerations
  • Combining constraints with procedures
  • AVC constraint handling differences
  • Testing a constraint net systematically

Super BOM, super routing and production

Build what was configured.

  • Super BOM concept and structure
  • Selection conditions on BOM items
  • Variant parts and optional items
  • Super routing and operation selection
  • Reference characteristics and formulas
  • Order BOM and its use in engineer to order
  • Production order from a configured order
  • Configuration changes after order creation

Variant pricing, AVC and operations

Price the configuration and run the model.

  • Variant conditions and pricing
  • Surcharges and discounts by characteristic
  • Pricing from reference characteristics
  • Advanced Variant Configuration capabilities
  • AVC simulation and explanation features
  • Migration from LO-VC to AVC
  • Model maintenance and change control
  • Common production issues in configuration

Projects you will build

Configuration model build

Model a configurable product with characteristics, class and configuration profile, then configure it in a sales order with a usable interface.

Dependencies and constraints

Add preconditions, selection conditions and a constraint net so invalid combinations are impossible, then test systematically for gaps.

Super BOM to production

Build a super BOM and super routing with selection conditions, configure an order with variant pricing, and generate the production order.

Tools you will use

Characteristics and classes
The question and answer layer of every configuration model.
Configuration profile
Scenario control and the configuration user interface.
Dependency editor
Preconditions, selection conditions, procedures and actions.
Constraint net maintenance
Multi-directional product rules for complex models.
Super BOM and super routing
Selection driven bills of material and operations.
Variant conditions
Characteristic driven pricing in sales documents.

Certification

Exam
Variant configuration is examined within SAP's S/4HANA manufacturing and sales credentials rather than a dedicated exam. We map the course to C_TS422_2023 (Production Planning and Manufacturing) as the nearest current credential.

What learners say

Constraints versus dependencies is the distinction everyone fudges. Building a constraint net and testing it for gaps was the most useful week of my year.

Ganesh T., SAP VC Consultant

We make configurable machinery. The super BOM and selection condition sessions matched our actual product structure exactly.

Wolfgang M., Product Data Manager

Hard subject, taught patiently. The debugging approach for dependencies that do not fire has saved me many hours since.

Divya S., SAP PP Consultant

What a day looks like

Invalid configurations
A combination the system allows but engineering does not, which means a missing dependency or constraint.
Model changes
New options and variants, each needing dependency and BOM updates without breaking existing orders.
Pricing queries
A configured price that looks wrong, traced to variant conditions or reference characteristics.
Order engineering support
Helping sales configure an unusual requirement, sometimes with an order BOM.
Performance
Large models that configure slowly, usually constraint or dependency design.

Frequently asked questions

Should I learn LO-VC or AVC?

Both, in that order. LO-VC concepts underpin AVC, and most live systems still run LO-VC. We teach the classic model thoroughly and then cover what AVC adds and how migration works.

Is there a dedicated certification?

No. Variant configuration appears inside the S/4HANA manufacturing and sales exams. We map the course to the Production Planning and Manufacturing associate credential rather than inventing a code.

Do I need PP or SD experience?

Yes, ideally both to some degree. Configuration spans the sales order and the production order, which is exactly why it is valuable.

Is this relevant outside manufacturing?

Mostly no. It is for companies whose products are ordered in combinations. That is a large set of manufacturers but not a general skill.

How hard is it really?

It is one of the harder SAP skills, because it is part modelling and part logic. That difficulty is why the pool is small and the rates are good.

Is there hands-on access?

Yes, for characteristics, profiles, dependencies, constraints, super BOM and variant pricing across all three projects.
