SAP Menus

SAP menus provide a structured way to find functions when you do not know the transaction code. Understanding the SAP menu (and role-based menus) helps newcomers discover functionality and helps everyone when a code is not to hand.

Quick answer

SAP GUI opens on the SAP Easy Access menu, a tree of every function by area, and most users get a role-based menu showing only the transactions their job needs. The Favourites folder pins the ones you repeat. Menus are for discovery; once you know the codes for your area, the command field is faster and you bypass the tree.

Key takeaways
  • Watch out: Relying only on menus once you know the codes.

The SAP Easy Access menu

On logging into SAP GUI you land on the SAP Easy Access screen, a tree of all functions organised by area (Logistics, Accounting, Tools, etc.). You can drill down to any transaction, though experienced users jump straight to it via its code.

Role-based menus

Rather than the full standard menu, users are often given a role-based menu showing only the transactions relevant to their job. This is cleaner and more secure, users see (and can reach) only what they need.

Favourites

The Favourites folder lets each user pin their frequently-used transactions for one-click access, a simple but big time-saver that complements the menu.

Menu vs command field

Menus are for discovery; the command field (transaction codes) is for speed. Beginners lean on menus; as you learn the common codes for your area, you increasingly bypass the menu entirely.

Common pitfalls

  • Relying only on menus once you know the codes.
  • Ignoring role-based menus that focus the options.
  • Not using Favourites for repeated tasks.
