SAP GUI Navigation
The SAP GUI is the classic desktop interface for navigating SAP. Mastering its layout, command field, menus and sessions is a foundational productivity skill for anyone working in SAP GUI-based transactions and configuration.
SAP GUI navigation is SAP Logon to pick a system, the command field for transaction codes, the menu bar and toolbar, the screen body and the status bar. Prefix a code with /n to start it here, /o to open a new session, /nex to log off, and keep several sessions open to work in parallel. Configuration still lives here.

The GUI layout

Working efficiently
The fastest navigation is by transaction code in the command field. You can also prefix codes: /n to start a new transaction, /o to open it in a new session, /nex to log off. Multiple sessions let you work on several tasks at once.
Sessions and windows
A single login can open several sessions (windows), so you can, say, look up a material in one while creating a purchase order in another. This parallelism is a big productivity boost over working serially.
GUI vs Fiori
SAP GUI still hosts the full breadth of transactions and configuration, while Fiori offers a modern experience for common tasks. Comfortable GUI navigation remains essential, especially for consultants and developers.
Common pitfalls
- Hunting through menus instead of using TCodes.
- Working in one session when parallel sessions would help.
- Not learning the command-field prefixes (/n, /o).
