It changes an existing material master, adding views or updating data (e.g. MRP settings, prices), across the functional areas that own each view.

• Material number.
• View(s) and organizational level to change.
• Editable fields per view.
• Change documents (history).

• Add missing views here (e.g. extend a material to a new plant).
• Coordinate changes with the owning function (each view has an owner).
• Use change documents to audit what changed.

• Changing valuation-relevant fields with stock present (restrictions).
• Inconsistent data across views.
• Unauthorized change to another function’s view.

• Changing MRP fields without telling planning. The next run behaves differently, and the people who notice are not the people who changed it.
• Extending to a plant and forgetting accounting. Purchasing works, and the first goods movement fails because the material has no valuation there.
• Changing a description and expecting reports to follow. Documents already posted keep the text they were created with, so the same material appears under two names in history.
• Editing a view another function owns. The field is open to you and the decision is not yours, and material master governance exists because of exactly this.
• Investigating without the change documents. They name who changed which field and when, which is usually the whole answer.
