SAP Storage location
A storage location is the organizational unit that identifies where stock physically sits within a plant. It is the most granular level of inventory management in standard SAP MM (below plant), and it appears on nearly every goods movement.
A storage location is a distinct stock area inside a plant, raw materials, finished goods or a shelf area, and SAP tracks stock per material, plant and storage location. It appears on goods receipts and issues, stock transfers, physical inventory and availability checks. Bin-level control belongs to WM or EWM on top. Define locations to match how the warehouse operates.

What it represents
Within a plant, a storage location is a distinct stock area, for example raw materials, finished goods, or a specific shelf area. Inventory quantities are tracked per material, per plant, per storage location, so you always know not just how much stock exists but where it is.
Where it is used
- On goods receipts and issues (where stock enters or leaves).
- On stock transfers between locations.
- On physical inventory counts.
- In availability checks and picking.
Storage location vs warehouse management
Standard MM tracks stock to storage-location level. For finer, bin-level control, organisations use Warehouse Management (WM) or Extended Warehouse Management (EWM), which sit on top and manage the detailed layout within a storage location.
Configuration
Storage locations are simple to define (per plant) but should reflect how the warehouse actually operates. Over- or under-granular storage locations make daily operations awkward.
