SAP Posting period
A posting period is the time interval (usually a month) into which financial transactions are posted. Controlling which periods are open or closed is how SAP ensures postings land in the correct accounting period and prevents changes to closed books.
SAP divides the fiscal year into posting periods, usually twelve months plus special periods for year-end adjustments, and every financial document lands in the period of its posting date. A posting-period variant controls which periods are open, by account type and company code. A posting not possible error is almost always a closed period.

What posting periods do
The fiscal year is divided into posting periods (typically 12 monthly periods plus special periods for year-end adjustments). Every financial document is posted into a period based on its posting date. Period control determines which periods accept postings at any time.
Opening and closing periods
Finance teams open the current period for postings and close prior periods once they are finalised, so no one can accidentally (or deliberately) alter completed books. This period-close discipline is central to reliable financial reporting and audit.
