SAP Job roles
SAP projects involve a well-defined set of roles working together, and knowing who does what helps you find your place and collaborate effectively. This page describes the main SAP job roles and their responsibilities.
An SAP project pairs functional consultants who configure FI, MM, SD, PP or HR to the business process with ABAP, Fiori, integration and HANA developers who build what configuration cannot, supported by Basis administrators running the systems and security consultants designing roles, coordinated by a solution architect and a project manager. Business analysts and key users bridge to the business.
- Watch out: Working in a silo, SAP delivery is deeply cross-role.
Functional roles
- Functional consultant: gathers requirements and configures a module (FI, MM, SD, PP, HR) to run the business process.
- Business analyst: bridges business and IT, defining requirements.
- Key user / process owner: the business-side expert who validates and champions the solution.
Technical roles
- ABAP developer: builds reports, enhancements, interfaces and custom logic.
- Fiori/UI5 developer: builds modern web apps and user experiences.
- Integration developer: connects SAP to other systems (PI/PO, CPI, IDoc, APIs).
- HANA/BW developer: builds data models and analytics.
Operations and leadership
- Basis administrator: installs, patches, tunes and monitors systems.
- Security/GRC consultant: designs roles, authorizations and controls.
- Solution architect: designs the overall solution across modules and systems.
- Project manager / program lead: runs the delivery.
How they work together
A typical project pairs functional consultants (what the business needs) with developers (custom capability), supported by Basis (the platform) and security (access), coordinated by architects and project managers. Understanding the whole team makes you a better contributor in any single role.
Common pitfalls
- Working in a silo, SAP delivery is deeply cross-role.
- Functional/technical hand-off gaps, poor specs cause rework.
- Underestimating Basis and security, they gate what actually goes live.
