History of SAP
SAP began with R/1, a single-tier financial system, then R/2 on the mainframe with integrated modules. R/3 in 1992 brought the three-tier client-server architecture that made SAP the enterprise standard. The 2000s wrapped it into SAP ERP and NetWeaver with CRM, SRM, SCM and BW alongside. HANA in 2011 and S/4HANA in 2015 rebuilt the suite in memory.

From R/1 to R/3
The early products were named for their architecture. R/1 was a single-tier financial system; R/2 was a mainframe, two-tier system that added integrated modules. The breakthrough was R/3 in 1992, a three-tier client-server architecture (presentation, application, database) that ran on standard hardware and could scale across large enterprises. R/3 made SAP the global standard for ERP.
The move to a suite and the web
Through the 2000s SAP wrapped R/3 into mySAP and then SAP ERP (ECC), part of the broader Business Suite, and built the NetWeaver technology platform to web-enable and integrate it. This era added CRM, SRM, SCM and BW alongside the ERP core.
The HANA and S/4HANA era
In 2011 SAP launched HANA, an in-memory database that collapsed the old split between transactional and analytical systems. In 2015 it released S/4HANA, a next-generation suite rebuilt on HANA with a simplified data model and the Fiori UX. This is the platform SAP is steering all customers toward, with cloud editions increasingly central.
