SAP Create material
The material master describes a product across the enterprise, maintained in views by function. This guide shows how to create one (MM01).
To create a material, enter MM01, give the number or let it be assigned, choose the material type and industry, select the views to maintain, basic data, purchasing, sales, MRP, accounting, enter the plant, sales organisation and storage location, fill each view and save. Without an accounting view it cannot be valued; without purchasing it cannot be ordered.
- This guide shows how to create one (MM01).
- Watch out: decide every view the process needs first, or meet each missing one as a separate failure.
Step by step
- Enter transaction
MM01. - Enter the material number (or let it be assigned) and select the material type and industry.
- Select the views to maintain (basic data, purchasing, sales, MRP, accounting, etc.).
- Enter the organizational levels (plant, sales org, storage location) for the views.
- Fill each view’s data and save.
Notes and tips
Maintain all views the process needs, a material without an accounting view cannot be valued/posted; without a purchasing view it cannot be ordered in that plant. Material type controls behaviour and defaults. Governed material creation (via MDG) enforces completeness and prevents duplicates in mature landscapes.
Common pitfalls
- Following steps without understanding the concept.
- Skipping testing in a non-production system.
- Applying blindly to a different scenario.
