SAP Software
The software prerequisites for an SAP installation, the operating system, database, kernel, and supporting components, must all be at supported versions and correctly prepared before the installer runs. This page covers what software must be in place.
The SAP software stack is a supported operating system at the required patch level, the database, HANA for S/4HANA, a compatible SAP kernel, and the host agent and SWPM that install and manage the system. Confirm the exact combination in the Product Availability Matrix, download matching media through the Maintenance Planner, and prepare users, file systems and libraries.

The software stack
- Operating system: a supported OS (e.g. certain SUSE/Red Hat Linux or Windows Server versions) at the required patch level.
- Database: HANA for S/4HANA, or a supported traditional database for older systems.
- SAP kernel: the executable core of the application server, at a compatible version.
- Host agent and SWPM: the tools that install and manage the system.
Confirm supported combinations
Use the Product Availability Matrix to confirm your exact OS + database + SAP release combination is supported. SAP is strict here, running an unsupported combination is unsupported for good reason and often simply fails.
Media and the Maintenance Planner
Download the correct, compatible media through the Maintenance Planner, which ensures the components you install work together. SWPM (Software Provisioning Manager) then performs the guided installation using that media.
Preparation
Beyond versions, prepare OS users/groups, file systems, and required libraries. Missing prerequisites (a library, a parameter) are the usual reason SWPM stops partway.
Common pitfalls
- Unsupported OS/DB/release combination.
- Mismatched media not obtained via Maintenance Planner.
- Missing OS libraries/parameters stopping SWPM.
