SystemConfiguration
Global behaviour is driven by the SystemConfiguration object plus Global Settings screens. Many switches live as keys you can view and set on the debug pages.
Common areas
Identity attributes, quicklink and LCM settings, certification defaults, and email/notification configuration are frequently adjusted.
Editing safely
Change configuration through the UI where possible; when editing the object directly, export a backup first and change one key at a time.
Environment differences
Keep environment-specific values (URLs, hosts) in the deployment properties, not hard-coded, so promotion stays clean.
